Used worldwide as a reference for the use and welfare of laboratory animals, it was first issued in 1963 as the Guide of the Public Health Service Policy, and the 8th edition was published in 2010. Since the first edition, more than 550,000 copies have been published. It is organized into key concepts, the animal care and use program, the environment, housing, and management of laboratory animals, veterinary care, and the physical plant. It presents the details and standards for the scientific use and care of laboratory animals.

What is the euthanasia of laboratory animals?
“Euthanasia” refers to bringing an animal to death by inducing loss of consciousness in as short a time as possible so as not to inflict prolonged pain. The term originates from the Greek words “eu (good)” and “thanatos (death).” After an experiment is completed, laboratory animals judged to have no prospect of recovery from disease or pain must be brought to death by a humane method. Euthanasia must be reviewed from the initial planning stage, taking into comprehensive consideration the species and age of the animal, the purpose of sample collection, and the proficiency of the person performing it.
